Ceres Rural Crop Challenge 2025: A University Agronomy Competition

New for 2025, this unique agronomy competition provides hands-on, real-world experience in crop management. This challenge will bring together agricultural students from leading universities, offering them the opportunity to compete in growing and managing a winter wheat crop, on a trial scale located at the Cereals 2025 site at Roy Ward Farms Ltd, Leadenham, Lincolnshire.

In Partnership with

Ceres Rural

How the Competition Works

Six student teams will manage wheat trial plots through the spring season. Each team:

  • Plans crop management, protection, and nutrition strategies.

  • Responds to seasonal conditions to optimise crop development.

  • Works independently, acting on their own initiative.
This is a unique, student-led agronomy challenge designed to test real-world skills.

Judging Criteria

An expert panel from Ceres Rural and the AICC, including Charlie Ireland and Jock Willmott, will evaluate teams based on:

  • Agronomic decision-making: Adapting to challenges effectively.

  • Clarity of communication: Clear reasoning and explanation of strategies.

  • Team collaboration: Contribution to the crop’s overall success.

Winners will be celebrated at Cereals 2025 on 11th June, with prizes including:

  • Certificates for the top three teams.
